MAJOR TRAFFIC SHIFT ON I-64 EAST AT HAMPTON ROADS BRIDGE-TUNNEL

Traffic Shifted onto New Bridge as of May 2.

Motorists traveling on I-64 East (towards Norfolk) should expect a new traffic pattern at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. Both eastbound lanes have been permanently diverted to the right at Hampton shoreline and onto the newly constructed eastbound trestle, also known as North Trestle.

Following last month’s historic boring machine breakout at the HRBT North Island, the upcoming shift is the next crucial milestone toward increasing safety, easing congestion and improving emergency evacuation readiness in Hampton Roads. This shift allows crews to begin demolishing the existing I-64 East marine (North) trestle. Westbound traffic will not be impacted. It is important that all drivers are patient, obey posted speed limits and drive distraction-free. Please pay attention to the digital message signs for important roadway messages.
